ML@50: Word of the Day — “Lutong Makoy”

Philadelphia Inquirer, Now You Know PH

Martial Law Word of the Day — terms that might confuse generations that never experienced Marcos’ brutality, but had meant life or death to the victims.

Following the 1986 snap presidential elections, which was rigged in Marcos’ favor, the term “Lutong Makoy,” a play on “lutong Macau” or something that has cheating involved, arose. “Makoy” was a nickname for Marcos.

The election fraud ended up being a watershed moment in Filipino history, paving the way for the People Power Revolution.
