ML@50 & Pop Culture: Manila Sound

In the 1970s up to ’80s, the Philippines was just trying to survive one of the darkest periods in its history while the rest of the world was obsessed with disco. A silver lining in all that gloom was the popularity of good local music –music that helped many Filipinos get through hard times, come together, and rise up against oppression.

Under the Marcos’ dictatorship, the country went through a horrible time which enabled its citizenry to gradually transition from a more colonial mentality to a sense of itself. One manifestation of it is the emergence of “Manila sound.”
