ML@50: Word of the Day — “ASSO”

Martial Law Word of the Day — terms that might confuse generations that never experienced Marcos’ brutality, but had meant life or death to the victims.

ASSO which stands for Arrest, Search, and Seizure Order is simply an arrest without warrant. It was a list no one wouldn want their name to be in. Even the one arresting doesn’t know why they’re being arrested, which demonstrates its arbitrariness.

Under Marcos’ mandate, the military had the power to detain and imprison anyone thought to be subversive or opposing the government. General Order No. 62, issued in October 1977, gave the defense secretary and his designated law enforcement officials the authority to issue an ASSO for a variety of crimes.
